Can you build a bridge that holds a small toy?
Suggested materials
Paper, cardboard, craft sticks, paper cups, masking tape, string, pencils and one small toy.
The challenge
Build a bridge across a 20 cm gap. The bridge should stand by itself and hold the toy for ten seconds.
Time
About 35–45 minutes: 10 to plan, 20 to build and 10 to test and reflect.
Plan, build, test, improve
- Imagine: Look at different bridge shapes. What might make a bridge strong?
- Plan: Draw a side view and a top view. Label the materials you will use.
- Build: Work together and make one change at a time.
- Test: Place the toy carefully in the centre. What bends, twists or stays firm?
- Improve: Change one part, test again and record what worked.

- Which part of your bridge carried most of the load?
- What did your team change after the first test?
- If you had twice as much time, what would you try next?
